Beaver Brae RB Eric Melillo By Scott Taylor, Photos by Jeff Miller Doug Kovacs, the head coach of the Grant Park Pirates football team, has a very special place in his heart for Winnipeg’s annual High School Football Championship Weekend. “This is as good as it gets,” he said during the on-line TV broadcast of the four championship games at Investors Group Field in mid-November. “High school football is the premier amateur football played in our province and these are the best teams. There is nothing better than this.” He’s pretty close to being right. It was a terrific two days at IGF that featured great football and large crowds. A spectacular third-quarter catch-and-run touchdown by offensive player-of-the-game Rowan turned out to be the difference as Brandon’s Vincent Massey Vikings beat Kenora’s Beaver Brae Broncos 15-14 to win the Winnipeg High School Football League’s Currie Division championship at Investors Group Field. In the Fourth Divsion final at the Bison East Field on Thursday, Brandon Neelin beat St. Norbert 14-13 while in the Junior Varsity final on Thursday at IGF, the Sisler Spartans ripped the Oak Park Raiders 48-21.
