Manitoba Thunder Win U-14 Girls Softball Title Back in July, the Manitoba Thunder claimed the Softball Manitoba U-14 A girls’ championship at Simplot Park in Brandon. The Thunder beat the Smitty’s Terminators 9-3 in the gold medal game. Tesia Hrom and Mia Rogerson combined on a three-hitter for the Thunder while Rogerson, Natalie Ellis and Megan Neiles scored a pair of runs each. The Thunder not only claimed the provincial title, but they also represented Manitoba at the Western Canadian U14 Championship in Winnipeg Aug. 6-9. Smitty’s earned the spot as Manitoba 2 at that same event while the South Interlake Phillies were the host team. Winnipeg’s Richert Wins at Hockenheim Winnipeg race car driver David Richert, not only reached the podium in German, he got to take a victory spin. Despite sweltering temperatures, Richert was able to win the Formula Renault Austrian Championship race at the Hockenheimring in Germany back in early July. “With a blistering air temperature of 39 Celsius, drivers were pushed to their absolute limits around the famous Grand Prix racing circuit in Baden-Wurttemberg,” Richert told SportsLife. “After taking an early lead, I spent the entire race under relentless pressure from my Polish teammate and fellow competitor, Jakub Smiechowski. It was a very difficult victory.” After he held off the charging Smiechowski, Richert was able to drive through the suffocating heat and bring home his first win with Inter Europol Competition in the Formula Renault category. He’s reached the podium five times and as a youngster in Manitoba, he won some Go-Kart races, but as a professional driver in Formula Renault, Richert has declared victory for the first time. Lavallee Wins Another Provincial Archery Crown Legally blind archer, Christie Lavallee has done it again. On July 12, Christie managed to set a record for the highest score achieved at the Manitoba Provincial Outdoor 3D Archery Championships in the Women’s Junior Compound Division and took that score all the way to another Gold Medal. Then, a week later, she attended the Rinehart R1000 US National Tour 3D Tournament in South Dakota and had to compete in the Women’s Hunter Division because they did not have a Junior Division. No problem. She put in an impressive performance and took second place in the 50 target North American Range and second place in the 50 target African Safari Range. When the points were combined from both ranges she ranked first overall among the Seniorlevel Women who competed at the National Tour event. She earned an R1000 Pin for breaking the 1000-point mark in the competition and another for her first-place overall finish. She actually hit an apple that was placed in the mouth of a deer target to earn bonus points. sportslife / 7
