14 SportsUnion | NOVEMBER 2016 college Soccer Lots of young athletes don’t think they have the ability to play at a higher level. Some, don’t even realize they are good enough to keep going. Emily Janiszewski, a sophomore goalkeeper on the SUNY Geneseo women’s soccer team, was not originally interested in continuing on to the college level. By Alyssa Presutti Sports Union The Orchard Park native, and former Hamburg Monarch’s Premier team member, never put too much thought into the possibility of playing in college. With a push from her high school coach, she decided to look at SUNY Geneseo and fill out the recruiting form. Just days later, she was contacted by the coach and asked to come for a visit. “As soon as the option to play soccer here opened up, I enjoyed the idea of playing,” stated Janiszewski. “Then I looked into the schooling so I set up a visit here and met the coach and honestly I just fell in love with the campus as soon as I walked onto it.” As soon as Janiszewski started practices her freshman year, she showed what she could do. She proved she had the skill to become the starting goal keeper as a freshman. “In practices I was doing really well during the preseason,” said Janiszewski. “Starting was wild to me. Just playing against all the older girls, it was a big transition from high school to college.” Enjoying the Opportunity
