The National Speedway Stadium

It ’ s been eight years in the making , but as of January 2015 the ground was broken on one of the most significant speedway projects in decades that has captured the imagination of fans nationwide .
Less than nine months since construction began the National Speedway Stadium , home of the Belle Vue Aces , has well and truly ceased to be merely an artists ’ impression .
Scheduled to open on March 19th 2016 , plans are already afoot to ensure this state-of-the-art venue is introduced to the world in style with its flagship event , the Peter Craven Memorial Trophy .
Reflecting on the journey that has taken this purpose-built stadium from vision to reality , Belle Vue boss Chris
Morton describes a quest to save the oldest , most famous speedway team in the world .
“ Myself and David came to Belle Vue in 2006 knowing that what we wanted to do was build a new stadium , and that vision evolved into what is now the National Speedway Stadium ,” he said .
“ The progress that has been made on the project in less than nine months is just staggering . Of course construction is still on-going and isn ’ t expected to be completed until February .
“ But the fact still remains - whether we qualify through to the play off final or not - that our days at the Belle Vue Stadium are numbered and I ’ m sure there will be mixed emotions about that .
“ It may not be the grandest venue and it may not , to some , be the greatest race track . But it ’ s part of our past , a key part of our history and while our focus is on the future we must respect our past .
“ Belle Vue Speedway could have easily closed down in 1987 but for the superb efforts of those dedicated individuals who worked tirelessly to ensure this club still had a future to look forward to .
“ The new stadium is going to create a lot of opportunity for the sport not only in Manchester but across the UK , but just what that looks like is something that ’ ll become clear as we go into 2016 .”
