RUGBY CLUB
L
ansdowne Rugby Club is a terrific example of how a terrific set up behind
the scenes can result in success on the field. Rugby Club Magazine recently
caught up with President Simon Coyle, Chairman of Rugby Colin Goode and
Chairman of Youth and Minis Kieran Walsh to find out more.
RC: How’s the general mood in the
Club at the moment?
SC: There is an excellent atmosphere
in the Club at the moment coming off
the back of a successful season at Senior,
Junior, Under 20 and Youth and Mini
sections. The year saw a resurgence of
First team rugby on the back of a mid-
table performance in the Ulster Bank
All Ireland League in Season 2015/16.
That followed on having been crowned
16
Champions for the second time in Season
2014/15 following which a number of
players moved abroad or away for career
advancement purposes and some went
on to the Professional ranks.
This Season saw most return and join
in with an excellent number of graduates
from the Under 20 and Junior set up.
Approximately 25 players graduated
from the Youth and Minis section into
the Under 20 and Junior ranks which
when allied to the traditionally strong
recruitment of Schools graduates made
for a very capable Under 20’s offering.
The Club’s continuing commitment
to the quality of its coaching and support
structures cannot be underestimated in
its contribution to our on field success.
Coaches like Mike Ruddock, Mark
McHugh, Will Mathews, Ben Armstrong
and Declan Fassbender together with a
dedicated team of volunteers at Junior
level give their all to prepare teams in a
most professional manner.
