CC : What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your role ?
WS : I have done a few roles during my time at the club – Social Secretary , Child Welfare Officer , Membership Secretary and now Cricket Chairman . All of them very different but each one lending a small hand in trying to help a club that , like the majority of sports clubs , is run by volunteers .
The most rewarding aspect of my role as Chairman is to see Shepherds Bush continually improve on the field of play across all aspects of the game from the 1st XI right through to our colts sides . The important thing about SBCC is that we promote a ‘ one club mentality ’ meaning that a 9 year old playing his first games of cricket for the club are treated with as much importance and respect as one of our 1s players . The most challenging aspect is maintaining that continuous improvement which needs a lot of hard work from a lot of people .
CC : How ’ s the general mood down at the club at the moment ?
WS : The mood at the club is , and has always been , fantastic . We run more sides than ever before , have a record numbers of colts boys and girls , have a fantastic social event calendar , are currently financially stable and play at an amazing
ground .
More importantly though I feel that we have a membership of individuals who all get on very well and all feel part of a very welcoming family . There has never been any of the typical politics often associated with sports clubs which is refreshing and there is no doubt that ‘ The Bush ’ is in a very good place .
CC : How would you say last season went for the club ?
WS : Overall last season should be regarded as a success for the club . The 1st XI achieved their objective of remaining in the Premier League
( huge thanks to the Duckworth
Lewis System !) and reached the final of the T20 Cup , our 2s / 3s / 4s all competed strongly across their respective divisions , our Colts teams all finished 2nd or higher in their junior leagues … and finally ( and arguably most importantly ) the bar take continues to be very healthy !
CC : What are your plans for the off-season ?
WS : We want to continually move the club forward so , following a questionnaire sent out to all members , we are trying to set up a strategy framework to achieve that . We are looking to employ a senior coach to run training for our adult teams , we are searching for a 2nd ground closer to home for our 3s / 4s to play at , we are setting up a working party to carry out aesthetic improvements to the clubhouse and we want to further our ties with local schools and communities .
