David Fletcher opened the batting for Surrey during their
1950s Championship successes. Former TMS statistician, Bill
Frindall, played in the juniors and First XI for several years.
Another recent product of Banstead’s juniors section is Surrey’s
vice-captain, Rory Burns, who has been piling on the runs this
summer.” with new formats. Another challenge is attracting enough
volunteers to run the club. As is all too common across
sports clubs, there is too much reliance on a small group of
individuals.”
Community “The club has a players’ pavilion,
built in 1892, and a clubhouse with
a bar and space for functions.
The clubhouse is a ‘temporary’
building, purchased in 1969,
with an intended life of ten
years. It is a miracle that
it is still standing but it is
surely coming to the end
of its useful life. The cost
in 1969 was £1,000. The
club will need nearer £1
million pounds to build a
replacement. The pavilion
is also in need of some costly
repairs, although there is
plenty of life in this fine old
building yet. Once the club
has finished plans for the new
clubhouse, fundraising will start
in earnest, probably next year.
The other big ambition is to further
develop ladies cricket. Although we
welcome ladies to join the club we have not got
enough playing members to maintain a competitive
representative side. We are hoping that the success of the
England side at the Women’s World Cup this summer will
provide the impetus we need.”
“We are a community club. We
have always played in the centre
of Banstead village. For many
years only Banstead residents
were allowed to play. The
ground is parish-owned
and locals often walk their
dogs around the boundary
during matches.
The club takes part in the
village May Queen parade
and Remembrance Day
events every year. The club’s
last horse that used to pull
the mowers before motorised
versions were available, spent
her ‘retirement’ years grazing in
the local churchyard.”
Challenges
“Like most clubs, we struggle to maintain
membership levels each year, particularly amongst 18
to 30 year olds for whom spending an entire day playing cricket
seems to be losing its appeal. U19 T20 cricket is popular and
encourages the ECB and the leagues to continue experimenting
