Whitby Yacht Club “I joined the club in 1966. We joined so we could participate in yacht racing and also to chat with likeminded people. I am the commodore, the equivalent to a chairman of an ordinary club. Technically, I’m responsible for everything that goes on in the club, but I depend a lot on fellow members of the committee. We have put on quite a lot of social events. They start in January with a Burns Night, then the Spring Fling (in an outside restaurant, St Georges Night, a 40s night, a games night, the Regatta, a day at the races (Ripon), a Karaoke night, the annual laying up dinner, a carol night and a Christmas lunch. We have had cruising boats cruising in Greece, northern France and eventually the Netherlands, plus closer to home, northern England. We occasionally race away and have had two visits to Scarborough, one to Sunderland for an overnight race back to Whitby and will be going up to Hartlepool in September. My plans for the rest of the year are to continue racing, participating in social events and sitting as Commodore on the committee.” Nigel Robinson, Commodore www.sportip.biz 23
