he inaugural meeting of Whitby Yacht Club (WYC) was held
on 24 June 1932 in the Custom House Hotel, later renamed the
Dolphin Hotel. Seven interested gentlemen attended this meeting.
Two years later in 1934 there were 51 fully paid up members and the
Club relocated to two rooms in the Pier House.
By 1936 the membership had again increased to approximately
200 and plans were adopted to construct a new building on
the roof of the adjacent RNLI Lifeboat House. The Club moved
into the new building in 1938 and enjoys this enviable location
today. (The Lifeboat House is now the RNLI Museum).
In 1970, there were more than 500 members and the Club had
been granted recognition as a training centre by the Royal
Yachting Association (RYA). Monies were raised from the
members and a Sports Council Grant to build an extension at
the rear of the Clubhouse.
Sport in Profile Magazine recently caught up with their
Communications and Yearbook Secretary Diana Isherwood
to find out more about the good work that the club has been
doing lately.
