powfoot golf club Involvement He told us, “I have been employed at Powfoot Golf Club since February 2006 first as Office Manager and then as Club Manager with responsibility for the general running of the club including the clubhouse operation, member services, visitors, the club shop, liaising with the course manager and all the financial aspects of running the club. After more than 20 years in banking, I was looking for a fresh challenge and the prospect of working in an environment where dealing with people was a major part of the job combined with being involved in a sport I had played and watched for many years was a great attraction.” T.A. Francis & Sons FAMILY BAKERS ESTABLISHED 1913 T.A.Francis & Son is a family run bakery business operating out of Annan and Dumfries in the south west of Scotland. Standing the test of time with 100 years of trading and in its fourth generation, we are dedicated to our craft. We produce fresh baked goods every day and are proud to do so. The Role “The most challenging aspects of my role are the same as they are for many small businesses, including trying to balance the books to make sure that the club continues to be inexistence for another 100 years, ensuring that the club complies with the ever changing regulatory requirements and keeping up with the social media boom – hard for a fifty something technophobe! We plan to continue the upgrade of the course drainage which started last winter and is part of a 5 year plan. Marketing is becoming one of the most important aspect of any golf club and we are looking to deliver initiatives to encourage more golfers to join or visit the club by highlighting that the golf course is open and playable the whole year round – on full greens for most of the winter. We offer a Winter Ticket where golfers, whether members of a club or not, can play the course from November to the middle of March for only £160. We are also targeting more Country Members as it takes just over an hour to travel from the centre of Glasgow to the club.” Youth “Youth Development is extremely important to the club as this is the future of the game and we need to encourage as many children as possible to take up and continue to play golf. There are regular coaching sessions held throughout the year for children of all ages with a view to adding to the junior membership of the club. We are a Development Centre under the auspices of ClubGolf and hope to develop our extensive practice facilities over the winter by adding a covered building for our driving range which will provide cover over the winter months for the junior coaching, as well as for the members and visitors to the club. We also hope to add a small 5 or 6 hole course on the driving range to provide a step between the novice golfers and playing on the course.” www.powfootgolfclub.com www.sportip.biz 47
