The Kennel Club champions dog shows as a great way to bond with your dog and cement a dog’s training and socialisation whilst competing against dog lovers from across the country and their much-loved pets. Obreedience The Kennel Club introduced ‘Obreedience’ in 2013 as a fun way to encourage people into competitive obedience, which tests how obedient and well trained a dog is. Obreedience is an exciting team competition which sees dogs working in teams, according to breed, to show off their levels of obedience. 28 Issue 08 It’s very much a team effort between dogs and owners, with handlers directing their dogs within each task. The dogs competing must carry out set exercises, such as a retrieve, a ‘send to bed’ and a scent exercise, which keep the dogs mentally stimulated whilst developing obedience skills and giving people a taste of competitive obedience. Obedience training clubs operate throughout the UK – many of which are licensed by the Kennel Club. They hold obedience competitions at various levels for a range of abilities and many give dogs and owners the opportunity to qualify for Crufts. The Kennel Club hopes to see competitive dog activities grow in the UK and to enable dog sports on home soil to rival those across the world and we are sure that the ongoing British love affair with dogs will enable this to happen. Anyone who wants to get involved in competitive activities with their dogs can visit the Kennel Club website for a wealth of information on how to do so. It offers a ‘Find a Club’ tool to allow dog owners to find local training and activity clubs in their area to begin their journeys into competitive canine activities, and anything else they may need to know to enjoy life with their four-legged friend.
