SQUASH rackets CLUB
N
ewport Squash Rackets Club was first established in 1968 by a group of local businessman at Raglan barracks
Newport. At the time they had a one court facility and with the progress the club made it was not long before they
needed to improve upon this.
They reached agreement to build two
new courts and then within two years
had further expanded their set up so that
they had four courts in total. Throughout
their existence Newport Squash Club has
always been committed to maintaining
high standards and catering for absolute
beginners though to National champions.
Based on Rodney Road in Newport,
Newport Squash Rackets Club is a friendly
club which prides itself on providing
visitors with a warm welcome. They have
players taking part at various standards
ranging from complete beginners through
to world ranking professionals.
The club competes in the South Wales
Premier and County Squash Leagues
and their success is highlighted by the
fact that they are able to put out more
teams than any other club in the country.
Additionally, they organise several annual
competitions for individuals, doubles and
teams and were the first club in Wales to
appoint a full time professional squash
coach.

This allows them to run a superb junior
squash skills development programme
as well as individual tuition, equipment
and stringing services. Their junior
programme looks to provide youngsters
from the local area with the opportunity
to play squash in a safe and enjoyable
environment whilst helping them to reach
their full potential.
There is more to the club than just turning
up and playing the game however and
they also have an active social scene with
a number of different events organised
throughout the year. Their internal league
system provides a great opportunity for
people to meet new friends and socialise.
Racketball can also be played at the club
using a larger softer ball.
They also provide a fully licensed bar
for people to enjoy a drink and discuss
the match. Newport Squash rackets club
is committed to playing an important role
in the community and with this in mind
they also make the bar and function room
available to hire for private functions.
A major benefit of this is that it has the
potential to provide the club with a
valuable source of additional revenue
which can be particularly important in the
current financial climate.
The club encourages anyone with an
interest in getting involved to make
contact with them and their committee
members will always be more than happy
to welcome newcomers to the club. They
invite non-members to attend their Friday
club nights and try out the club before
making a decision on whether they wish
to join.
There is much to admire about the superb
set up that the Newport Squash Rackets
Club currently has in place and hopefully
they will be able to keep up the good work
for many years to come. Everyone at Sport
in Profile Magazine would like to take this
opportunity to wish them the best of luck
for the future.
