seaton carew golf club FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/SPORT_IP Seaton Carew GOLF CLUB H aving first been established in 1874, Seaton Carew Golf Club has gone on to put together a history of which they have every right to be proud, with some of the finest golfers in the country having played at the club. Harry Vardon, J H Taylor, James Braid as well as other Open Champions being some of the most notable. Over the years a lot of work has been put into making sure the club is the best that it can be with the Course being lengthened to 6,500 yards in 1925 and over 2,500 buckthorn bushes added. The work clearly paid dividends with Walter Hagen playing an exhibition match on the course and commenting, “It is a splendid course, the links are well groomed. It is not an easy course and provides a good test of golf. It is one I would like to play quite often.” Across the course there are a total of 22 Holes which allows for 5 different layouts with three of these being played regularly. These are The Old, Brabazon and Micklem and they all provide a challenging test for a modern day golfer with plenty of twists, turns, dunes and bunkers. The Micklem course was used for the Carris Trophy in 1996 when Graeme Storm defeated Justin Rose by a single shot. Based on Tees Road in Hartlepool, the club is now led by President Jim Waggott with their professional being Clifford Jackson. They pride themselves on making sure that visitors are given a warm welcome and have built a fine reputation for the hospitality that they provide. This is greatly helped by the Clubhouse that they have which provides superb views of the 1st and 18th hole. The clubhouse has first class catering and 20 Issue 08
