Community
“Chesterfield Hockey Club is a
community club. We are the only men’s
hockey club in North Derbyshire and
we hire our pitch to Staveley Ladies
Hockey Club. We share our training
night with the junior section and the
Ladies Club, which has the benefit of
progressing the junior girls through to
the Ladies Club. We also hire out the
Astroturf pitch to Five-a-Side Soccer
Leagues. St. Mary’s High School use the
facility during the day and everything is
coordinated and run by The St. Mary’s
Community Sports Partnership (a joint
partnership between the school and the
hockey club).”
Facilities
“After two years hard work and constant
lobbying we received Sport England
Lottery Funding, in 2001, which enabled
us to build an Astroturf facility at St.
Mary’s School. The original pitch had
served us well for 13 years but was due
for replacement.
In the summer of 2014 SIS Pitches UK
Ltd proved to be the most helpful in
putting together the best specification
which suited our budget and needs.
The pitch was completed in time for
the 2014-15 season and everyone is
extremely happy with the playing
surface. To complement the Astroturf
facility, the school has built an indoor
sports hall and state of the art changing
rooms which are ideal for junior hockey
on cold, wet winter days.”

Hockey Club back in the summer of 2014. The pitch is situated in the grounds of St Marys Roman
Catholic High School in Chesterfield, and is used by both the school and Chesterfield Hockey
Club.
After almost thirteen years of use by two hockey clubs (fielding seven teams and a thriving junior
hockey group) and the school for multiple sports activities and Five-A-Side football every evening,
the surface was in need of replacement.
SIS Pitches were chosen to take the project forward as they were the most helpful in putting
together the best specification which suited the budget and needs of the school and hockey club.
SIS’s hockey product, Pro Hockey 10 was chosen for this pitch which is an ideal surface for high
level hockey. The carpet for the pitch was manufactured in SIS’s Maryport factory, and tested to
FIH (Federation of International Hockey) standards, and then handed over to the installation team
for the construction.
This installation was completed during the schools summer holidays so as to not interfere with
the school curriculum, and although some delays occurred all work was completed within budget
and on time.
Gary McCormick, Chairman at Chesterfield Hockey Club commented:
‘All participating teams and visiting teams have commented on the excellent playing surface and
shockpad. A great improvement on the previous pitch.
We would certainly recommend SIS Pitches to any of your prospective clients and they would be
welcome to visit our excellent facility at St. Mary’s High School.’

Challenges
“Over the next 5 years our biggest challenge is to ensure
our First team play at the highest level possible and to
give the current, very talented, crop of junior players the
opportunity to progress through the club, and into our
First team. We must also maintain our social events.
Last season we made well over £2500.00 from events
such as golf days, hog roast, race nights, speciality
food nights and a 100 club draw and weekly scratch
cards.”
Involvement
“I have been associated with Chesterfield Hockey
Club for 44 years, having been involved in most
administrative positions, both on and off the
playing pitch. I learnt my hockey at school, club and
University in Edinburgh. After university I moved to
Sheffield and joined Sheffield Hockey Club for 3 years.
I then moved to Join Chesterfield Hockey Club so that I
could get involved in running a smaller club. From my first
position as First Team Vice-captain to my current role as Club
Chairman there has never been a dull moment.”
