Directive for Distributing Ashes on Ash Wednesday As we look ahead to Ash Wednesday , February 17 , we must adjust our liturgical rite because of the pandemic .
Ashes have been used as a sign of repentance from Old Testament times to today . In most countries , the practice of placing or sprinkling a small pinch of palm ashes on the top of the head on Ash Wednesday remains common practice . However , in the United States , the custom has developed where ashes are placed on the forehead in the shape of a cross .
Due to the concerns about the spread of COVID-19 , modifications must be made to our usual method of imposition of ashes .
• We will minister ashes with a Cotton Q-tip .
• Cotton Q-tips and a container of ashes will be on a tray .
• To impose the ashes , the minister will take a Q-tip , dip it into the ashes , make the sign of the cross on the person ’ s forehead with the Q-tip while saying the usual words .
• The minster will dispose the Q-tip into a receptacle after each person .
• There will be a new Q-tip for each person .
• A receptacle for used Q-tips will be located at each station where ashes will be distributed .

Mass at 6:15 a . m ., 9:00 a . m . and 6:00 p . m . Word Service at 12:00 Noon Ashes will be distributed at all these services Sacrament of Reconciliation : 5:00 – 5:30 p . m .
