SPLICED LIFE / ISSUE 01 convention / rage 2013 The future is now rAge always has a huge variety of tech on show, and this year was no exception. It’s a big year for hardware, especially in the gaming arena with the launch of two new consoles on the cards in the next few months. The Playstation 4 is set for release just before Christmas this year, on December 13th, and excited gamers hovered over the glass case examining the console from every angle. The Xbox One also drew huge crowds, and there was a substantial line for a closed doors demonstration of the console and its exclusive title, Dead Rising 3. Nintendo were not to be left out of the tech display as they brought their new Nintendo 2DS to the show for visitors to get their hands on. Along with the gaming tech, there was a decent peripheral turnout, with headphone leaders Turtle Beach displaying their current offerings, as well as Steel Series and Razer coming to the party with their latest products. "With over 90 entrants, this pushed the annual Legion Ink rAge Cosplay Competition into the number one spot for South Africa’s largest cosplay event." One of the biggest highlights every year is the Cosplay Competition, and 2013 was no exception. With over 90 entrants, this pushed the annual Legion Ink rAge Cosplay Competition into the number one spot for South Africa’s largest cosplay event. For those of you not in the know about cosplay, in a nutshell it involves dressing up as your favourite comic book/ anime/gaming character. The competition was tough this year, with a number of impressive and intricately crafted costumes and the crowd went wild for the competitors who put on an awesome performance for spectators. As visitors, journalists, and exhibitors (I’ve occupied all roles), we spend three long, tiring days traversing the floor of the Dome, experiencing all there is to see, touch, hear and feel (I leave out taste because that only applies to the food and would be weird otherwise). We leave with aching feet and sore backs. Tired from days of shouting at each other over the noise. Tired from walking the floor a thousand times over. Tired. But jubilant. And the last thing I hear from others at the end of every rAge? “See you again next year!”? 61
