SPLICED MAGAZINE / Behind the creaking door / Cutting it close ISSUE 01 Cutting it close About three months ago I came across a video on YouTube that would start the ball rolling and give myself and the rest of the team the kick-start to finally put Spliced out there for all the world to see. by Chris Savides That video was Neil Gaiman’s commencement speech to the School of the Arts in 2012. His message was simple. Enjoy the ride; let it take you to remarkable places. Enjoy yourself in the midst of your adventure. Go and make interesting mistakes, break rules, learn from them. But above all, if you want to do something, just get up and do it. Start it. Make good art. I immediately shared that video with my long time close friend Pippa. Needless to say we were both blown away and inspired. A week later we were meeting with another friend of ours, Tim, whose beautiful photos you will notice throughout this issue. He agreed to join us and our team grew to three. All of a sudden things were falling into place, we held editorial meetings with our writers, created a plan of attack, and now here we are, a fully fledged magazine filled with all things awesome. By now you’ve hopefully read the magazine from cover to cover and gotten to the very last page of our launch issue. Thank you for making it this far. Hopefully it took you hours and hours to go through each and every page, soaking up each delicious word, drinking in each beautiful photo. What you don’t realise is that it’s the night before our first issue goes live, I still have to write my final column, I still have to finalise a few design decisions, I still have to sleep (Oh God, to sleep again!). To be honest I haven’t had this much fun working on a project ever, I say now that the issue is out and making its way through the interwebs. I want to say to everybody involved, well done team! We did it. We actually did what we set out to do, create a magazine filled with awesome “stuff”, all of it original content that we’d want to read. Thank you to our Editor Pippa for the hours poring over printed pages, making corrections in red pen all over the place and making sure we could come as close to perfect as possible with this inaugural version of Spliced. Thank you to our amazing photographer Tim who spent hours, days, giving our vampire shoot just the right amount of sexiness with a dash of Halloween terror. Thank you to our two beautiful models, Lauren and Nika, you ladies set the bar high for future issues. Thank you to all the writers for sending in your articles on time and for being so eloquent and articulate with your words. Thank you to Dark Carnival, FLD, Cosmic Comics and Balkan Burger for providing us with great prizes to give to you, our readers. And finally, thank you to you, our readers. We put this magazine together with passion and care, we made good art, and we hope you like it. See you in December for issue two, more great stuff is being planned even as you read this.? 147
