“If we shot from a higher depth, looking down at Estrella, then the light was better. But then if you look up from beneath her you get a really good silhouette. I think we ended up using more of the shots where she’s looking up towards us – you can see her face much better.” But getting a good view of Estrella was only part of the challenge. The other part – the whale sharks – couldn’t be directed quite so easily. “Because they are so big you kind of forget that they can move really quickly. With a small movement they are on you in a heart beat from 50 meters away. People always remind me that they only eat algae and are really friendly but, while you know that is true, it’s still a shock when you first see them.
