Department fundraisers, donations
help Woodruff get new turnout gear

The Woodruff Fire Department,
through fundraisers and community
donations, purchased more than
$14,000 worth of equipment for the department in 2013, according to Fire
Chief Mike Timmons.
The largest investment was paying
for one-half of 11 sets of turnout gear,
including pants and jackets.
“The department fundraisers vital
to the department include our annual
pig roast the first Saturday in October
and a gun raffle,” said Timmons. “We
also have a calendar drive for town residents and a car show Memorial Day
weekend. They all are well attended.”
Timmons said the fundraisers are
necessary for the department to purchase much-needed equipment. The
turnout gear cost the department
$1,308 for each set for a total of $6,898.
The helmets, costing $198 each, totalled $3,047.
“The state-of-the-art turnout gear is
vital to firefighter safety and it goes
hand-in-hand with firefighter comfort,”
said Timmons. “The modern gear offers
thermal protection without limiting a
firefighter’s mobility.”
Timmons said the department also
updated its thermal imaging camera
for $3,647 and purchased additional air
bottles for $800.
The Woodruff Fire Department took
delivery of a new engine from Marion
Body Works in 2012, according to Timmons.
“The $315,000 engine features a
2,500-gallon tank, a 1,250-gallon-perminute pump and foam unit on a 2011
Kenworth chassis,” said Timmons.
Timmons said tax dollars paid for a
majority of the truck, but money had
been set aside over a number of years.
He said the department funded equipment for the truck through fundraisers.
Engine 2, as it is called, replaced a
1984 engine, which was sold to a fire
engine collector. Other features of the
truck include a generator system,
power lifts for ladders and the portable
water pond, scene lighting and 2,500
feet of large-diameter hose.
“There also is storage for air packs
and extra air bottles, lights, hose fittings, a radio and speaker system for
the pump operator, axes and an automated external defibrillator (AED)
purchased by the department,” said
Timmons.
