Airport holds mock airplane fire exercise
The Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport tested its emergency response
plans and protocols this past summer,
highlighted by a mock fire of an aircraft’s engine as a plane taxied away
from the gate.
Oneida County Emergency Management, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office,
Rhinelander Fire Department, Rhinelander Police Department and the
Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport
partnered to host the mock full-scale exercise Aug. 12.
“A mock full-scale exercise allows airport officials and staff and emergency
responder agencies to respond in realtime testing agency standard operating
procedures,” said Kenneth Kortenhoff,
director of Oneida County Emergency
Management.
Kortenhoff said the full-scale exercise
response tested equipment, communications and mutual-aid assistance.
“It identified what worked, what didn’t, what is needed, what we could do
differently and/or improve upon,” he
said. “Preparedness plans are necessary
to have in place, and plans need to be
tested often.”
Numerous emergency responder
agencies were on-site testing standard
operating procedures, according to Kortenhoff.
Agencies included Monico Fire, Newbold Fire and First Responders,
Nokomis Fire and First Responders,
Oneida County Ambulance Service,
Oneida County Emergency Management, Oneida County Medical Examiner’s Office, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Pelican Fire and Rescue, Pine Lake
Fire and First Responders, Rhinelander
Fire, Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport, Rhinelander Police Department,
Stella Fire and First Responders, Wisconsin Emergency Management.
Firefighters and rescue personnel from across Oneida County participated in a mock aircraft fire at the Rhinelander-Oneida County
Airport this past summer. The full-scale emergency response exercise included mannequin victims.
