Land O’ Lakes emergency crew
gets four-wheel drive ambulance

The Land O’ Lakes Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services
(EMS) added a brand new ambulance
adorned with the stars and stripes to
its fleet of emergency vehicles this
year.
The 2013 truck by Horton Emergency Vehicles was built on a Ford F-450
Super Duty chassis and features a
much-needed four-wheel drive system,
according to EMS Supervisor Sig
Baake.
“We had some trouble in the snow
last winter,” she said. “This new ambulance will help us get around on some
of the back roads in the area better, especially in the winter snow.”
The vehicle is equipped with a Warn
16.5ti winch to help get in and out of
remote spots. It’s capable of pulling
16,500 pounds.
The ambulance came with a
$181,000 price tag plus another $3,800
for the vehicles two-way radios. The
EMS crew held a fundraiser at Art Impressions and sells T-shirts to help offset the cost.
The fire department held a raffle for
a new all-terrain vehicle (ATV) this
fall, which will help make payments on
a $185,000 pumper/tanker it purchased in 2011.
The 2005 pumper was purchased
from the town of Manhattan in Nye
County, Nev., according to Fire Chief
Sam Otterpohl.
“The Pierce pumper was actually
built in Appleton, so it is coming home,
of sorts,” said Otterpohl. “The truck
only had 3,600 miles on it when we
purchased it, so it is like new.”
Otterpohl said the department traded in a 1996 rescue truck and received
$40,000 for the trade-in. He said tax
dollars and department fundraising
paid for the truck.

Knaack said the Kenworth diesel fourwheel drive truck features a 1,700-gallon tank and a 1,000-gallons-perminute (gpm) pump. It also carries 30
gallons of foam.
“Because the truck is four-wheel
drive and smaller than most pumpers,
we will be able to get it in tighter locations,” said Knaack. “We also can use it
to respond to vehicle accidents in the
