Page 42 Progress — 2014 Three Lakes FROM PAGE 41 computer lab space was converted into a multifaceted construction lab for our science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) classes. This construction area, separate from our technology education shop area, provides stations for our students to work on multiple projects designed and outlined in their STEM classes. The completed construction upgrades in the technology education area are some of the district’s major steps toward enhancing STEM education in the district. Summer youth programs This past summer, the district implemented its first summer recreational/ educational offerings. The summer programming was available to all children in the district. Half-day activities were implemented for two weeks in June and served about 75 students. Busing was provided to students from Sugar Camp Elementary School as the activities were held at the Three Lakes facility. The program was spilt into two age groups: K-2 and 3-6. The K-2 students were able to participate in a day camplike experience with three of the district’s elementary teachers. The 3-6 students participated in a variety of recre- ational activities, including some time in sport specific practice such as basketball and soccer. Students in both groups were excited to be a part of the pilot programming and many parents expressed their appreciation for the summer opportunity. With the success of the program this past summer, the district is looking to not only offer the programming again, but to expand in length and outreach. Security project Just after the new year, the district completed Phase 1 of a security project focused on preventative security. This project includes a buzzer calling station at each of the main entrances where office personnel will be able to monitor all people entering the facility. The project also includes proximity card readers at main entrances in the district for staff/personnel and alarm sensors at each of the exterior doors in the district. These new security measures will help in ensuring unidentified patrons do not enter the school building unannounced during operating hours. Both the Three Lakes and Sugar Camp facilities will be accessible after hours, as before, with future security projects focusing on securing our fitness center from the rest of the building. In addition to the exterior security, all district personnel will begin wearing identification badges attached to lanyards to make them more recognizable
