8 WAYS TO STAY SANE WHEN YOU STAY HOME

1 Make sure any agreement you make with your work regarding a career break is clear and get it agreed in writing before you go on maternity leave.

2 Try lots of different baby groups (e.g breastfeeding cafes/Tumble tots/Monkey music/local church baby and toddler groups) to establish a network of other parents/carers.

3 Enlist the help of a partner/family member/friend to look after your baby/children whilst you have some “me-time” on a regular basis- even if it’s just to sit and have a coffee without someone on your lap!

4 Keep a record (even if just a quick note on your phone) of those precious moments/milestones to look back on - you think you’ll remember them but most of them will get forgotten! Helps to raise a smile in the tougher moments.

5 Try to enjoy the time with your little one(s) even when it’s frustrating and tough- the years go so quickly even if the days feel long.

6 Even if you’re someone who finds a routine really helpful with your baby/toddler, don’t always feel beholden to it - an occasional day out of it won’t hurt and breaking things up a little and doing something different can sometimes bring a breath of fresh air.

7 Have fun with your little one!

8 When you feel lonely, which you will at times being at home alone with small children, know that you aren’t alone. Don’t struggle in silence. Find a friend or support group, speak to your midwife/health visitor/GP for help.
