BIRTH OPTIONS Cont.

ELECTIVE C SECTION

If it is an elective section there should be the opportunity to plan the birth with the consultant and ask for a gentle approach with skin to skin and early feeding in theatre. Delayed cord clamping should also be possible.

In an emergency or unplanned situation there may not be so much opportunity to state preferences but a quick word with the midwife may help in this case. The partner should be able to take photos and these are a very important reminder for the woman.

As with every significant event in our lives we should be well supported by your team. Your partner of course but perhaps also a private or independent midwife or doula may give you greater confidence and choices. Their knowledge and experience can only enhance the support you receive from the hospital maternity team.

CELEBRATE ALL BIRTHS AS THE BEGINNING OF A JOURNEY

Whatever your journey to motherhood no woman should ever feel a sense of guilt or find herself apologizing for the outcome.

After all, if we plan a journey to a wonderful event we don't feel guilty if the road is closed or the train cancelled leading us to take a different route. We accept this as out of our control. Approaching birth with an open mind and reacting flexibly to events will ensure that you emerge feeling positive about your experience. Your experience, your birth!

So whatever birth you choose, or that chooses you, be proud. You created, grew and gave birth to a new human being. Your very own minor miracle.
