YOUR ORGANS Brain Your brain lives inside your skull and the top of your spine. It controls everything in your body – it is more clever than any computer ever made. It receives thousands of messages telling it what is happening in the world around you from your senses, as well as sending thousands of messages to your body telling it what to do. Lungs Sit very still and try not to move. What is the one thing you always have to do, even when you try to be as still as possible? Breathe! We all need to breathe to stay alive. You have two lungs and these make up one of the biggest organs in the body. They sit underneath your ribcage. If you place your hand flat on your chest you can feel your lungs filling and emptying with air as you breathe in and out. The oxygen that this air brings into your lungs is transported into your blood and pumped around your body by your heart. Intestines You have two intestines – your small intestine and your large intestine. When food leaves your stomach it goes to your small intestine first. This is where the good parts of your food (called nutrients) are absorbed into your body and taken into your blood. Any left over food moves into your large intestine. Your large intestine deals with everything your body does not need. Here, water is removed from the food and then what is left (your poo!) gets ready to leave your body. 6 SPARK
