Icy Lake Phenomenon
Lake Baikal in Russia is bigger in
volume than all of America’s Great
Lakes put together – and contains
enough fresh water that all the world’s
rivers and streams would take a year to
fill it. It is the deepest lake in the world.
Over winter the lake is so thick with ice
because of subzero temperatures that
people skate, and even race on it!
Blow Your Ice Trumpet!
You might know that icebergs can
creak and icicles snap, but did you
also know you can make ice music? Here are ice instruments from
Norway’s Ice Music Festival (listen to the sounds that the ice produces!):

The festival takes place at the first full moon of the year, with the weather
conditions deciding how good the ice will be, as the sound varies with the
temperature.
Sparkling Diamonds! Kawayu Hot Springs, Hokkaido
The Kawayu hot spring is famous for the appearance of “diamond dust”.
(Kawa means “river” and “yu” hot in Japanese.) Steam from the hot spring
causes air moisture which then freezes in the very cold air. It falls to earth
as crystallised water which looks like diamond dust.
