Hair Timeline iMATTER Throughout history, people have worn their hair in a wide variety of styles, many inspired by the clothes they wore at the time. Hairstyles tell us about peoples’ ages, culture and country. 50 BC Roman Emperor Julius Caesar wore his hair short and flat, brushed forward from his crown. Romans used false hairpieces to make their hair thicker or longer. A modern day chignon P h ot o: A nn W uy ts 300 BC In ancient Greece men and women’s hair was very different. Men's hair was short and occasionally shaved. Women had long hair pulled back into a chignon (a kind of bun). Many dyed their hair red and sprinkled it with gold powder, adding fresh flowers! 200s Monks and nuns in the Christian church had the crown of their hair shaved, so they had a bald spot! It’s called a tonsure. 1600s King Louis the 14th of France started to lose his hair at a young age so he started a trend for wigs.
