KERENSA MEETS THE KELPIES
By Kerensa Lawrence
The Kelpies are ginormous
sculptures of horses (the
biggest in the world!) near
Falkirk, in Scotland. They
are 30 metres tall, taller
than the Tower of London’s
parapets. They are two
horse heads. Imagine if the
statue was a whole horse it would be like Big Ben and
the Tower of London built
on top of each other!
The sculptures were
completed on 27th

SPARK
November 2013. Those huge
sculptures, that weigh 300
tonnes each, took just 90
days to build!
Kelpies were legendary
water horses that could
turn into humans. These
statues were designed by
Andy Scott, and were based
on the Clydesdale horses
that pulled wagons and
barges. Andy used two real
Clydesdales called Baron
and Duke as models. ‘D’ for
‘Duke’ and ‘down’ helps you
remember which horse’s
head points downwards.
If you take a tour, the guide
will tell you all about them.
You also get to go inside
one of the Kelpies, where
you get to make a wish if
you’re lucky. Mine hasn’t
come true yet!
