It’s not just things we eat and drink that need water it’s also things we use every day like paper. That sounds silly because water usually makes paper all soggy, but water is needed for paper production, with a single sheet of paper requiring 12 litres. Water needs to be collected – it doesn’t just appear in our baths or showers. It takes time and eff ort to collect it and take care of it. People in some African countries can spend many hours collecting water. The liquid that dissolves the most substances is water. Wherever it travels, it takes with it nutrients, minerals and chemicals. It dissolves many sugars, salts and acids but oils and fats don’t mix well with it. Water is the most important element in the world. Make sure you use it properly! Get Up And Sing! While you’re fast asleep in the early hours of the morning, there’s beautiful noise outside your window. Birds are up and singing to start their day! It’s called a dawn chorus. 18 SPARK The dawn chorus is best in spring, when male birds let other birds know which is their territory and that they’re ready to fi nd a mate. Spring air is cool and sounds travel far because there isn’t much traffi c at that time. You can hear birds such as robins, wrens and blackbirds singing as early as 3am – or the crazy tapping on bark by a woodpecker. Birds often sing at that time rather than eating, because it isn’t light enough for them to hunt for food.
