Here is a question that cropped up this week

Q) I find I am bleeding quite badly from my gums. Is that something I should see my doctor about or is this something for the dentist?

A) This is something you should consult your dentist about. There could be a number of reasons ranging from:

Gingivitis, inflammation in the gums caused by bacteria- Can lead to Periodontitis, caries(hole in teeth) and infections in the pulp(tooth nerve)

Periodontitis, "gum disease". Loss of bone in which the teeth are attached to. If untreated this could lead to mobile teeth and eventually tooth loss. Halitosos (bad breath) is also a common problem.

Studies have also shown that periodontal disease has a systemic effect on general health, for example higher incidence of Myocardial infarction amongst smokers with periodontitis.
