FIRE SPECIAL

22

The 30th August 2012 - I REMEMBER IT WELL - it was the early evening and news came that a fire had started near the Mijas area of the Costa del Sol., i presume they started around 8pm - the photo below is just one of the photos that Lisa Sadleir (collaborator with SpainLINKED past issues of the online magazine) posted on facebook.

I was posting something on facebook myself about the magazine and the website and the postings came quick and fast. It wasnt a good night for a fire to begin at all.

The hot winds made sure that the fire spread like crazy across the Costa del Sol. Ok, the fire is spreading towards Kims, there are 3 cars there now, I have been asked to beg for help, they are evacuating the animals now and if anyone can help, please go to the COIN road from La Cala or Fuengirola, on the coin road take the turning for LA ATALAYA MACORRA was one of the first messages i shared and reposted on my facebook account at 9.30pm on that dreadful night. Another message i reposted was: according to Mijas Radio the fire is in Entrerrios and Atalya, both of which have been evacuated. They have all emergency services on stand by, those who aren't already working and areas set aside for evacuation. Even areas for horses are available. I felt like i had to help our so i just sat up all night until about 1am ( i had to be up at 5am to work) constantly reposting and keeping people up to date.

Lisa Sadleir, Helen Hooper, Melissa Jones, Tracy Ann Hayes, Karoline Barrett, Irene Austin, Mandy Vellacott, Lorraine Williamson and Kaz McVey were a few of the people that i have logged on that evening that you could see were REALLY rallying together to get the word spread.

The fire then moved over a length of more than 30 kilometers, affecting five municipalities: Alhaurín el Grande, Coín, Ojén and Marbella. As it was nighttime the planes that normally scoop up water from the sea and help put out the flames couldnt fly!!

Noone will know how long it will take for things to get to the way they were, its difficult to grow on burnt ground. For tourism it isnt good at all and for the locals its an eyesore. I surely do believe that more than 90% of recent fires have been PROVOKED! I find it absolutely disgusting and i hope they find everyone involved.
