PRO Kiranbhai D mistry Namaste, Each registered charity has a variety of obligations to fulfil and the key ones are meeting members’ needs and the legal obligation set out by The Charity Commission (CC). These are not onerous. As I took on the role of Trustee at SPA Birmingham this year, my own interest in the correct governance for our SPA (UK) charity took a sharper focus. There are six key duties in the governance jigsaw: 1. Ensure your charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit. 2. Comply with charity’s governing document and the law. 3. Act in your charity’s best interests. 4. Manage your charity’s resources responsibly. 5. Act with reasonable care and skill. 6. Ensure our charity is accountable. Good governance is not just about rules and a box ticking exercise. For example, in Birmingham our Executives have taken care to ensure we have the correct gas certification, put a child protection policy in place plus the requisite training for Executives etc. There is a lot more in governance such as attitudes, culture and whether we are putting our values into practice. 10 vol. 42 | Prajapati Sandesh 2017
