HQ REPORT PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release 1st October 2015 Shree Prajapati Association helps transform lives in the Amhara region of Ethiopia   President The Shree Prajapati Association (SPA UK), a UK-based Hindu charity, has raised £18,996.51 for WaterAid, by carrying out a number of local activities, including fundraising dinners and sponsored walks, over a period of 12 months. This gift will be used to transform lives in Ethiopia’s Burie district, located in the northern Amhara region. The district has one of the lowest levels of safe water supplies and improved Namaste anA d sanitation in Ethiopia. lack of safe latrines is also a serious issue.   Jai sh ree Krish na When WaterAid started work in the region in 2013, only 17% of the population had access to clean water. It meant that most communities had no choice but to drink from dirty water sources, making many of the children sick. Thousands had no access to toilets and were forced to go outside which spread disease fast, and few had awareness of good hygiene to keep their families healthy. SPA UK’s gift will help WaterAid ensure that by 2016 everyone in the district has access to clean water and a decent toilet. WaterAid is working together with members of the community, and using locally available materials to ensure that the project is sustainable in the long term. WaterAid is the only organisation carrying out this type of work in the area. The President of SPA UK, Jitubhai Mistry, who also worked in the UK water industry for over 35 years said: “It is a great pleasure to be involved in supporting WaterAid’s activities. It is even more pleasing to see SPA UK choosing to support a project in Ethiopia as I was born and brought up in Ethiopia. I have a good local knowledge of the area and I am confident that people in the Amhara region will benefit from this project.” ENDS For more information or to arrange interviews please contact Jo Lehmann, Media officer on [email protected] or 0207 793 4909.
