Brazilian Medical Spa Treats the Mind, Body and Soul

Going to the spa for many is an opportunity to have a relaxing massage, get your nails buffed, lose some weight or just have some chill out time with your loved one or friends. In the past 25 years I have visited numerous spas in over 60 countries including more medical service focused spas like Canyon Ranch in Tucson and S Medical Clinic in Bangkok, Thailand. I have come away rejuvenated, energized, and yes even dropped a few necessary pounds on this walrus-shaped body of mine.

Rarely is it a life changing or life saving experience. That changed when I travelled to Gramado, Brazil and stayed a week at the Kurotel Longevity Medical Center & Spa. Gramado, located in southern Brazil, is a picturesque town with a mix of Bavarian, Portuguese and Brazilian influences and architecture. Fondue restaurants, cute cafes, apparel boutiques and chocolatier shops line the main street. Gramado is wellness with taste appeal!

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS

The expectation I had before the trip was to experience a few new spa treatments, obtain

some nutritional eating advice, lose a few pounds, and squeeze in a few fitness workouts.

By week’s end I had indeed lost about eight

pounds, experienced a few innovative spa treatments, enjoyed a fantastic fondue meal at a local restaurant, tried my first zumba fitness class (and realized my rhythm is so out of sync and pathetic compared to Brazilians) and even learned what minerals and vitamins were lacking in my body.

So nothing out of the ordinary that you would not get at other leading spas around the world. But then I had an unwelcome surprise during a battery of medical tests.

My blood pressure was at dangerously high levels. After cardio tests and further blood pressure readings it kept getting higher - too high without some necessary intervention.

I detest taking drugs recreationally or for medical reasons. So to be advised to go on high blood pressure medicine which could be necessary for the rest of my life was not what I wanted to hear.

With a history of heart problems and stroke in my family Dr. Mariela de Oliveira Silveira, the medical director and daughter of the Kurotel founder recommended I go on high blood pressure medicine immediately.
