Men, Romance and Spa

How to Get Your Guy to the Spa?

I’m a man. I don’t eat quiche. I have a hairy chest that refuses to be waxed. But I am a self-confessed spa addict and proud to be one.

I’ve have visited spas and had numerous treatments from more than 70 countries around the world for almost 30 years. I must confess when I first started going to spas I could hear the whispers in the spa’s hallways, relaxation lounges or hot tubs whether it was a spa staff member or spa guests: “Oh he must be gay,” or “When did they allow men into spas,” or “He’s just trying to pick up women.”

Such was the life of a man in the early spa world. First I’m not gay and secondly I don’t go to the spas to pick up women. I just like to relax naturally without popping pills and getting drunk. I treasure the human touch and the therapeutic benefits of various treatments. A spa is a sanctuary and my way of chilling and zoning out from the stresses of everyday life.

Spas have been guilty of neglecting men. This is less so in Europe and Asia where spa/wellness is more part of the lifestyle. In many cases you have more men than women going to the spa. Spas in North America until recently have been all about women. This is reflected in the spa staff attitude, the products used, the treatments and the decor and design.

How can spas change and women persuade their manly man to join in their spa experience with the bonus it will ignite the flames of romance?

Understanding the very fragile male psyche is key. Yes we men are fragile despite the rough exterior. Getting your spa virgin guy to the spa takes tact and appealing to his manhood. The minute he starts feeling emasculated it’s game over. How do you prevent that?

Get some facts and back-up. Find out if his friends and co-workers have gone to the spa – and hopefully had a good experience. In conversation casually mention so and so went to the spa. That reduces any ridicule he may get from his buddies. .
