publicity for the hotel that would potentially
draw in both locals and non-residents.
The hotel brochure from this time can tell us
a great deal about what it was like to stay
there and also what demographic of society
the company was catering for; it eagerly
lists the respectable facilities on offer such
as the Banqueting room, the Ballroom
and the Writing room. This suggests that
the target demographic at the time was
for a more middle-class and aspirational
guest, somewhat snootily declaring “our
amenities lend themselves… to those who
prefer “to dress” for dinner”; as opposed
to the ‘hankie-on-the-head’ work
