Sooner State ABATE Sentinel - Volume 4 Issue 1 HOOBEE’S Safety Corner Greeting my SOONER STATE ABATE Brother and Sisters. It’s been a wet summer. If the weath- er continues this way, we may have lots of snow this winter. I hope it stays nice all winter and we all continue to enjoy the great riding. Just in case it does turn nasty, let’s make sure you ready, and talk about proper winterization of your motorcycle. First off, if you are storing your bike, you should clean any potentially corrosive road dirt and bugs from your motorcycle. Afterwards, waxing and pol- ishing your bike are a good idea, before stowing it away for months at a time. Next you will want to protect your bike’s internal surfaces – piston rings, cylinder walls, valve seats, etc., as well as external surfaces that can oxidize. The first thing to do is fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline with fuel stabilizer mixed in. Sart the bike and bring it to normal operating temperature to boil away any aqueous mois- ture. If storing a carbureted bike longer than two months, the fuel supply should be shut off at the under-tank petcock and the float bowls should be drained completely. Otherwise run the stabilized fuel through the system, and it should keep for a couple months. However, for normal Oklaho- ma preparation, take it for a short ride.10 to 20 minutes will get the stabilizer in to the complete fuel system. After the bike has cooled, pull the spark plugs, and pour about 1oz of clean engine oil into the cylinders. Roll the bike in gear to coat cylinder. This will provide a rust barrier; then reinstall the plugs. An oil change is a good idea now too. Change your hydraulic fluids if you system has not been flushed in the past couple years or 10,000 miles or more. Spray a corrosion inhibitor all NON- painted or chromed surfaces (i.e. a silicone lube or a similar protective agent). Apply only to metal pieces, to provide an extra barrier against corrosion. Apply- ing a vinyl protective solution on vinyl saddles is also helpful. To stop rodents from making your muffler into their winter retreat, and prevent corrosion, spray a light coating of water-displacing lubricant inside the exhaust. Then soak a clean rag with it, and stuff it in the end of the exhaust. Finally, wrap the exhaust with a plastic bag and tie it off to keep out moisture. Make sure your coolant is clean and mixed to correct proportions. If in doubt, flush and re-fill. The easy solution for your battery is a microchip-con- trolled “smart” battery charger. They can monitor the charge and keeps the battery topped off. The last thing to do is fill your tires to recommended pressure and roll it a little once a month to prevent flat spots. Remember, in the cold, air becomes denser. That combined with inev- itable slow leaking, tire pressures will drop, and need to be refilled in the spring. Checking and topping them off mid-winter is not a bad idea either. Ideally, a full body stand should be used for long term storage. Because lifting the bike off the floor will prevent potential flat spots on the tires. It will also make spring startup maintenance much easier! Till next Time ride safe my family...
