screening. But I was the boss. I could break my own rule if I wanted to. I hired my two friends anyway. I am sorry to tell you that two years later, I had to let both of them go. It was very painful. I had tried so hard to salvage them. I had gotten to the point of calling one of them every morning, saying, “How are you doing on this or that? Have you thought about this?” It was all for naught. Horst Schulze I lost a lot of sleep over these two situations. But in the end, for the health of the overall company, I had to take action. I had “followed my gut” instead of making a careful, information-based selection. I still feel bad about this years later. If we carefully select people and then train them thoroughly, these awkward m o m e n t s s h o u l d b e fe w a n d f a r between. We will be able to experience more moments of sheer joy as we see employees thriving in their work and making strong contributions.
