Nerja’s annual Residents’ Day 27 The worries surrounding the pending Brexit seemed a million miles away on Sunday afternoon as Nerja enjoyed its annual event to celebrate the diversity of its international community. In warm sunshine, more than 30 groups, societies, charities and others were on show to the public in the plaza de España, behind the town hall and a stone’s throw from the Balcón de Europa. Nerja is home to 5,970 residents from outside Spain who constitute 27.1 per cent of the municipality’s total population. Although British nationals make up more than a third of the foreign contingent, the town is home to people from around the world. This was evident in the list of participants on the day which ranged from the American Club, through the German Shanty Choir to the Swedish magazine Svenska Magasinet. A varied programme of events on the stage included performances by several local Spanish dance groups who enthralled the crowd with their traditionally flamboyant displays. The Nerja branch of the Royal British Legion were given a Special Mention this year and Chairman David Graves and Poppy Appeal Organiser Dorothy Allen were there to receive a momento for the occasion. Dorothy and Pauline Burns ran a Tombola Stall which exceeded all expectations by raising €365 towards this years Poppy Appeal. Thanks must go to all who donated prizes for this stall knowing that all proceeds were going to serving and ex- serving members of British armed forces in need of help. ISSUE 188
