Football abuse
A 63-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years imprisonment by Málaga ’ s Provincial Court for abusing three minors when he was a youth football coach . The court heard his victims were vulnerable youngsters to whom he promised a professional career . He was ordered to pay compensation of € 35,000 to two of his victims and handed a distancing order against one of them for seven years .
Shot dead
A 65-year-old nightclub owner died and his son was shot in the chest in a Cádiz street last month . The Guardia Civil have detained one person , believed to be the dead man ’ s son-in-law . The incident in the town of Paterna de Rivera is understood to have happened during a fight connected to a family feud over an inheritance . The injured man is recovering in hospital .
Child abandonment
A Madrid woman is being charged with child abandonment after she was found in the early hours carrying a baby “ on the edge of hypothermia .” The woman was drunk while the infant was wet and without warm clothes in temperatures below freezing . Police then found a second child , who had been on her own for hours , at their home .
Drug warning
The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products has issued a warning about a drug used to treat uterine fibroids . It recommends no new treatments using Esmya should begin until the drug is reevaluated following reports of several serious cases of liver damage . The Agency says liver functions should be monitored every month in existing patients , and between two and four weeks after treatment ends .
Bullfight ban
The UN says Spain should ban minors from attending or participating in all bullfighting activities . The committee on the Rights of the Child says children need to be protected from their “ harmful effects .” It said it was also concerned about the level of violence reported in the 55 bullfighting schools in the country .
Points record
A driver had his car impounded in Sevilla after being stopped for dangerous driving in La Macarena . Officers seized the vehicle after it was realised that , not only had he lost all 12 points on his licence for numerous previous offences , but dozens more besides . After a positive breath test , the police database showed he already had accumulated a remarkable balance of -70 points .

New MRI machine for Vélez Hospital

Regional health service managers accompanied Nerja Mayor , Rosa Arrabal , on a visit to the Hospital Comarcal in Vélez-Málaga last month to see its new Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine ( MRI ), which was first used a few days earlier . The new equipment , which cost € 1.1 million , means that patients living in the Axarquía will no longer have to go to hospitals in Málaga for MRI scans .
As well as investment in the machine itself , the hospital has also spent € 100,000 updating facilities in the MRI department , including patient waiting areas and staff preparation zones . Spain ’ s national health representative for Málaga , Ana Isabel González , said that the new equipment would give “ faster and better results with improved precision and quality .” Last year , the hospital refered 7,342
While the debate continues over local rail services west of Málaga , the socialist PSOE party in the province last month announced that they will demand a rail link to run from Nerja to Estepona . José Luis Ruiz Espejo , the provincial PSOE president , told a press conference that the provision of a high performance railway along 150 kilometres of coastline is a , “ strategic project to ensure social and territorial cohesion .”
He said that the province of Málaga is expected to show the largest population increase in Andalucía over the next 20 years , and that an efficient coastal railway would be sustainable in both energy and environmental terms . He attacked the “ insensitivity ” of the present Partido Popular government of Mariano Rajoy towards Málaga , claiming it places the province , “ at the tail of investment .”
There have been no rail services east of Málaga since the late 1960s . A line between Málaga and Torre del Mar patients to other hospitals for MRI scans . However , with the arrival of this equipment all such scans can now be performed in Vélez-Málaga . The other four new MRI machines are in the Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Victoria , Hospital Valle del Guadalhorce and Hospital Universitario Regional de Málaga .

Socialists call for a new Málaga coastal railway

opened in January 1908 and was extended to Vélez-Málaga six months later . It reached Periana in 1921 with an extension to Ventas de Zaffaraya in 1922 which closed in 1960 . The lines finally closed completely in April 1968 .
Plans to extend the line as far as Almería never materialised , nor did a 1881 project to extend the tram lines in the city of Málaga from El Palo to Torre del Mar and Vélez-Málaga . A more recent idea to extend the Vélez- Málaga tranvía west from Torre del Mar to the city of Málaga was not finally pursued .

Socialists in Congress have asked Renfe to bring the first AVE train of the day from Málaga to Madrid forward by 25 minutes . The 6.20am weekday departure arrives at Málaga Atocha at 9.08am which creates a problem for businesses whose working day begins at 9am . The rail operator is being asked for the arrival time to be changed to 8.45am .
