New tenant A plot of almost 4,500 square metres in Vélez-Málaga’s agriculture technology park has been acquired by a producer of sub-tropical fruits. Pitfyd S.L. has invested €628,000 on the site and will move its operation there from the La Pañoleta industrial estate. A company spokesman said the development would allow it to expand and, “make the leap into the international market.” Excavator topples One of the excavators carrying out beach regeneration work in Torrox last month overturned into the sea. The operator was able to escape uninjured but the machine was left semi-submerged. The incident occurred at 2.00am as work was continuing throughout the night to ensure the beaches were in perfect condition for the San Juan midsummer celebrations. Workplace death A 46-year-old construction worker died in Málaga last month after falling from a height of two metres. The victim was taken to hospital suffering from factures to his legs and a blow to the head. The works inspector opened an immediate enquiry into the incident. Drunk driver A bizarre accident in El Morche last month saw a 37-year-old man from Barcelona suffer a head wound and bruising when he was in collision with a car. He told police that he was trying to stop his 45-year-old partner from driving after she had been drinking. The woman was later found to have more than twice the permitted level of alcohol in her blood while the car suffered extensive damage. Fishing strike Málaga’s entire fishing fleet supported a one-day strike last month in protest at cuts proposed by Brussels. Local boats joined other Spanish, French and Italian crews after the plans were announced for a European reduction on fishing for species which live on or near the sea bed. The cut-backs between now and 2021 would reduce working days by a further 10 per cent. Granada detention A 39-year-old man wanted for fraud in Las Palmas has been detained in Granada. He was found to be carrying a prohibited taser gun disguised as a mobile phone, as well as knives hidden in his clothing, plus drugs and €710 in cash. Further drugs and large knives were found in the vehicle he had been using. Vélez negotiations for tranvía continue The town council in Vélez-Málaga wants the regional government to provide support for its paralysed tramway system equal to that which had been given to a similar service in Jaén. The tranvía between Vélez and Torre del Mar ended in June 2012 after six years of operation because of spiralling debts. The Junta de Andalucía has proposed subsiding the Vélez tranvía by assuming 40 per cent of the deficit – the difference between tickets sold to passengers and the actual running costs of the trams. However, the equivalent subsidy offered to the Jaén service is 75 per cent, and Vélez Town hall wants the same deal. Vélez is already pressing for its tranvía to be classed as a service “of metropolitan interest.” Last month, town representatives met regional transport Minister Felipe Lopez to put
