News Bather rescued Emergency services in Málaga were called to the mouth of the Guadalhorce river last month where a bather was seen to be in trouble. Witnesses raised the alarm when he was spotted apparently unable to return to the shore. He was rescued by the crew of a Red Cross launch and then taken to hospital suffering from severe hypothermia. Family death Police in Granada say a 39-year-old man with reduced mental faculties called 092 last month advising he was about to commit suicide. When officers arrived at his home in the city, they found the body of his 78-year-old mother on the floor. Investigators say there were no signs of violence and she is believed to have died two days earlier from natural causes. City fire A short-circuit is believed to have started the fire which broke out in the loading bay of a supermarket in Málaga’s Vialia commercial centre, next to the city’s rail terminal, last month. Fire crews were on the scene quickly and extinguished the blaze on the first floor. However, the area then had to be ventilated as large amounts of smoke had been generated. Protected area The EU has agreed to add the Montes de Málaga natural park to its list of protected natural areas. In November 2016, the Environment Ministry requested its inclusion in Sites of Community Interest. The park will now become part of Natura 2000, an ecological network of the EU’s conservation and protected areas. Teenage custody A 14-year-old has been ordered to be held in precautionary custody by a Granada court after he attacked his mother with a knife. The Minors Prosecutor said the boy played on-line games for hours but when a breakdown caused a loss of his connection to the internet, he asked his mother to repair it. When she could not, he attacked her. Green investment Málaga is to invest €4.3 million in the city’s green zones. Plans include play areas for children, paving of terraced areas and other improvements. The La Concepción botanical garden will benefit from the installation of solar panels and upgrades to its sanitation systems.
