Entertaining school
It all started in 2017 when José Manuel Cabezas Cabello , the lecturer in English at the Instituto de Educación Secundaria ( IES ) Sierra Almijara de Nerja , attended a function in Torrox Campo . It was there that he met Margaret Batt and her partner Julien Glazer . José Manuel asked them if they would come and talk about their lives to his final year English students before the latter went off to university . “ We will do better than that , we will entertain them as well ,” replied Julien . Margaret had learnt to recite ‘ The
Highwayman ’ by Alfred Noyes at a very early age , standing in the kitchen of their house in Dublin , listening to her mother who had a great love of poetry . Julien had learnt to do party pieces from his time with the Nerja Serenaders choir when , at their annual dinner , everybody was expected to entertain . So he sang his own version of ‘ The Sons of the Desert ’.
Julien and Margaret were invited back again this year , this time to a double class and José Manuel asked them to include more audience participation . So , aided by Julien ’ s daughter , Nicola , to encourage the students , the ‘ Bubble Car Song ’ was added and the students called out ‘ Beep-Beep-Beep ’ at the appropriate moments . They also primed the students to learn the words of Hoyt Axton ’ s ‘ Della and the Dealer ’ so that they could join in the refrain , which they did , with gusto . Over 40 students gathered together in the large hall supervised by José Manuel . They had a good grasp of English and were able to engage in conversation with the three “ Extranjeros ” after the photoshot . Everybody was impressed and had a great time .
