Gálvez honoured

Benidorm ambulance “ loses ” injured Brit

A group from Málaga was in Florida on May 8 for the unveiling of a new statue of Bernardo de Galvéz , born in Machararviaya in 1871 and a hero of the American revolution . The monument in bronze by the artist Bob Rasmussen has been funded by public subscription . A strong link between the Málaga village and the US city has built up , helping to promote the Axarquía to Americas .
Brit detained
A British man detained in Málaga on a UK court order has been found to be operating under 75 different identities . He is reported to be an expert at stealing armoured vans and is also wanted for the illegal possession of arms and ammunition . He was arrested in the city at 2.00am after presenting false identity documents to police officers and then offering them € 500 to let him go .
Remains found
Construction work on new Social Security offices in Vélez-Málaga ’ s calle Lope de Vega was halted last month after workers uncovered human remains . An investigation immediately open to determine the age of the find which could date back to pre-history . It consists of the remains of several people , along with a number of objects which it is hoped will help determine their antiquity .
Breakdown delay
A medical union has complained that a lift in Málaga ’ s maternity hospital has been out of action for a year . An operation was recently delayed for half an hour when a child became trapped in an alternative lift . The elevator which remains broken is usually reserved for emergencies and the hospital says spare parts for its repair are expected to arrive from Germany during June .
A British man is reported to have been left in a ditch by an ambulance crew in Benidorm , two of whom later tested positive for cocaine and cannabis . The unnamed victim , who had suffered serious knife injuries which required hospital treatment after being caught up in a fight between four Britons , was found a short distance from a hospital , lying unconscious in a pool of blood .
The 30-year-old patient ’ s disappearance was only discovered when police rang the Hospital de la Vila Joiosa to enquire about his condition . The emergency department said they knew nothing about the man and a search was launched .

Rincón is Spain ’ s motorbike capital

Rincón de la Victoria has more motorbikes per head of population than anywhere else in Spain . The data comes from a new survey published by the Association of Insurance Companies ( Unespa ) and the National Association of Two Wheel Businesses ( Anesdor ) which notes that coastal areas and large cities experience the largest concentrations of bikes .
Regionally , Andalucía leads the country with 685,046 machines registered , of which 173,942 are mopeds , 328,545 are motorcycles and 183,459 are scooters . Ranked by provinces , Málaga with 156,090 two-wheelers comes fourth after Barcelona , Madrid and Valencia . Málaga is also the province which has the most motorcycles per head of population .
The municipality of Chipiona in Cádiz has most mopeds per thousand , Blanes in Girona has most scooters , but with 71 machines per thousand inhabitants , Rincón de la Victoria leads in the motorcycle category . Vélez-Málaga and Mijas are also rank high in the same category .

The patient is reported to have recovered quickly in hospital but has been unable to tell police what happened as he was intoxicated at the time of the ambulance transfer .

Arcos appeal
Málaga ’ s anti-corruption prosecutor says an appeal will be launched against sentences recently handed down to the mayor of Alcaucín and others involved in the Arcos case . Most of the 33 defendants were handed jail terms of less than two years in a trial which considered alleged planning irregularities in the town .
Former mayor José Manuel Martín Alba is appealing against his 17-month prison sentence on charges of urban prevarication , influence peddling and falsifying documents .
Drunk driver
A 44-year-old man was arrested by police in Granada after driving for four kilometres on the wrong carriageway of the A-44 . As he left at the junction for Lanjarón , his car was in collision with another whose driver suffered light injuries . The suspect was detained after a breath test showed him to be more than twice over the legal alcohol limit .
