Island ban
Homeowners in Palma will not be allowed to rent apartments to tourists from July 1 . The capital of Mallorca says that , between 2015 and 2017 , the number of such units rose by 50 % to 20,000 , but only 645 are properly licensed . Detached single-family homes will be exempt , unless they are on protected rural land , near the airport , or in non-residential areas .
Road death
A 53-year-old woman died and another aged 24 was injured when their vehicle left the road and fell into a ditch in Sayalonga last month . Both had to be rescued from the wreckage after which the injured victim was taken to hospital in Vélez-Málaga for treatment to multiple bruises . Police opened an investigation into the cause of the accident .
Hit and run
Police in Algarobbo have been searching for a hit-and-run driver after a two-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle . The child suffered only bruising and was taken to hospital in Vélez-Málaga . The incident happened at a filling station where the toddler had gone to buy sweets with family members and where she was struck by a dark coloured van which failed to stop . The search has been expanded outside the town while the family have sought help on social media .
Málaga shooting
Three people were detained in Málaga during May following a shooting incident in the La Palmilla district of the city . Shots were heard at about 11.50 one Wednesday morning , causing panic when the market area was at its busiest . Police called to the scene found at least eight spent cartridges and say two vehicles displayed bullet impacts , so it was a miracle that no-one was injured .
Domestic incident
A man was arrested in Torre del Mar last month accused of domestic violence against his 43-year-old partner and their 16-yearold daughter . He was detained after climbing the outside of their apartment block and trying to break in from the balcony . The mother said they were frightened after having suffered his aggressive attitude and occasionally “ blows , insults and threats .”
Jellyfish alert
Yellow flags have appeared on a number of Málaga beaches warning of the presence of Portuguese Man O ’ War jellyfish which can deliver a sting known to have killed humans . A lesser sting can induce dizziness and vomiting . Experts say any found on beaches should not simply be buried as they can still sting an unwary barefoot walker .

No date for second Torrox breakwater

No progress has been made on the provision of a second breakwater to protect Ferrara beach in Torre del Mar . Confirmation came from Ángel González , regional head of Mediterranean beaches , last month . He was in the town to inspect work underway to regenerate Ferrara following severe weather in January and February . Replacement sand is being brought to the beach from the mouths of the Torrox and Benamargosa rivers in a € 520,000 project .
According to Gonzalez , Ferrara still has a stabilisation problem which could be solved by a central breakwater . This , he explained , requires a preliminary study , a draft of the proposed project and an environmental report . He said the government is committed to the plan , “ although we can not specify the time .”

Podemos suffers internal strife

The founder of the left-wing party Podemos has hit the headlines after buying a house with his girlfriend . Pablo Iglesias and Irene Montero , who is also a Podemos Deputy , have taken out a € 540,000 mortgage over 30 years for the purchase of a villa with swimming pool in the Madrid dormitory town of Galapagar , ahead of the birth of their twins .
Unfortunately , Iglesias has made comments in the past about the “ political caste ” who he described as living in “ swanky villas and penthouse apartments ,” when up to a quarter of adults were out of work and even those on the average wage found it tough making ends meet .
Journalists have also unearthed a Tweet sent by Iglesias criticising the purchase of a new € 600,000 apartment as an investment by the then economy minister Luis de Guindos , immediately before the government , of which he

lighthouse in Torrox was installed during 2016 and is reported to be working well . The 115 metre structure , which has significantly reduced sand losses along Ferrara beach , cost € 307,000 which was shared between the provincial government and Torrox Town Hall . Replacing sand washed away along the coast of Torrox is estimated to have cost around € 12 million since the 1990s .

Members of Podemos , now Spain ’ s third largest political party , say that the couple are being hypocritical , given that their joint salaries are boosted by Iglesias ’ commitment to presenting two TV programmes . While complaining about press intrusion into their private lives , Iglesias and Montero have agreed to consult grass-roots members of Podemos on whether or not they should stand down .
Paseo design
Local people will decide the design of the new paseo maritimo through Torre del Benagalbón . A petition last year to retain the coastline in its natural state was signed by 6,000 people , but plans exist for a concrete walkway and cycle land along the 3.6km stretch . Rincón de la Victoria Town Hall says it will invite comments over the next six months .
