Toddler tragedy
A three-year-boy has died in hospital in Málaga after being pulled from a private swimming pool in Rincón de la Victoria last month . He was resuscitated at the scene and rushed to intensive care in a serious condition but died the next day . The child is reported to have been in an area being used by several families when he fell into the water .
Cyclist injured
A 38-year-old National Police officer based at Málaga airport was admitted to hospital in the city last month after being knocked off his bicycle by a Nissan 4x4 vehicle . His injuries included five broken ribs , including one which pierced a lung and caused internal bleeding , plus fractures to a vertebra and severe bruising . The car driver tested negative for alcohol and an investigation continues .
Catalan “ blackmail ”
Cataluña will declare independence unilaterally if Madrid prevents its planned self-rule referendum going ahead in the autumn , according to El Pais . The paper claimed to have seen a draft document outlining the regional government ’ s plans to secede from Spain and to become a “ parliamentary republic .” In Madrid , PM Mariano Rajoy called the news “ blackmail ,” and promised it would never happen .

Rape on Nerja beach

A 25-year-old Granada man was ordered to be held in jail by a Torrox court last month after it heard that he allegedly raped a 37-year-old woman in broad daylight on Nerja ’ s Burriana beach . He and another man were arrested shortly after the incident around midday on Sunday May 9 .
Police say that the victim showed signs of inebriation and possibly the effect of drugs when they arrived at the scene after being alerted by members of the public on the beach . Witnesses say the second man , a 35-year-old , was watching the attack and , “ apparently awaiting his turn .”

Nerja plans to ban beach bookings

Nerja wants to become the third resort in the Axarquía to ban sun-seekers from making early-morning reservations for places on its beaches . The practice was adopted in Torrox in 2014 and in Algarrobo the following year .

Two Moroccan nationals said to be in an “ advanced and dangerous process of radicalisation ” were arrested in Madrid last month . The Interior Ministry said they formed a “ terrorist cell specialised in carrying out electronic jihad ,” and were disseminating massive amounts of audiovisual material . One is said to have maintained “ incessant ” contact with more than 100 websites oriented to terrorism training .
Barça arrest
The former president of Barcelona Football Club , Sandro Rosell , was detained last month by police investigating money laundering . Searches were made at his home in Barcelona , as well as in Lleida , Girona and Andorra . Also suspected in the same investigation is Ricardo Teixeira , former president of the Brazilian Football Confederation .
The problem has been tackled in the town ’ s first-ever ordinance on the use of the municipality ’ s beaches which is available to consult at www . nerja . es . The tripartite coalition at the town hall has sent the draft to opposition parties and to businesses which operate along the town ’ s coastline , and invited comments and suggestions .
The ordinance is then expected to be debated at a meeting of the town council and , if passed , will make it illegal to place beach furniture such as chairs , tables and sunshades on a beach early in the morning with the intention of occupying the space later in the day . Two beach inspectors are expected to be appointed to spot such abuse and to remove such objects left on the sand . Recovering these from the town hall will cost their owners € 30 .

Illegal gardens
The group GENA Ecologists in Action says two beach bars in the municipality of Vélez-Málaga are operating illegally in public spaces . It has reported the businesses in Mezquitilla and Caleta de Vélez to the Environment and Planning departments at the Junta de Andalucía . In both cases , says GENA , public land has been turned into gardens by the beach bar operators .
