Nerja ’ s fiesta to find new destination

Last month ’ s annual procession of farm carts and horses in Nerja may have been the last in its present form . Every May 15 since 1984 , the event held to mark the feast day of San Isidro , the patron saint of the land and those who work on it , has culminated close to the caves in Maro .
As usual , the long , straggling line of oxdrawn wagons and horse-drawn carriages left the centre of Nerja at midday , and made its slow way along the N-340 main road to Maro where the usual huge party was held in gardens near the entrance to the famous caves . However , the Foundation which manages the caves complex has been calling on Nerja Town Hall to find an alternative site for the event .
It says the impact on the area created by the event , as well as the traditional overnight campout ahead of the procession , is causing concern . Highly qualified scientists are reported to have been advising the Foundation to
Four people were detained in Torrox Costa last month after being caught red-handed carrying out a robbery on a mobile phone shop . Local police in Torrox and the Guardia Civil from both Torrox and Nerja were involved in the operation .
The owner of the shop raised the alarm . He had been keeping watch on the premises for several nights following a spate of robberies from similar outlets along the eastern coast in recent weeks . Police believe that those arrested may be responsible for a number of these incidents .
The gang included three Spanish nationals and one Moroccan who are aged between 18 and 21 and come from Marbella , Benalmádena and Málaga . In their car , police found a club , a pair of shears , two balaclavas and several minimise such an impact on the important historical monument , both inside and outside .
One alternative site understood to be in contention is Cerro de Los Cancharrales , about a kilometre from the town centre in the area of Castillo Alto , where the event was held annually between 1966 and 1983 . The Town Hall is presently canvassing opinions from people in the area .

Torrox thieves caught red-handed screwdrivers , as well as a mobile phone . A second phone , found on one of the detained men , was recognised by the shop owner as having come from his store .

Police emphasised the success of the operation was a result of coordination between local police and the Guardia Civil , together with the “ invaluable cooperation ” of a member of the public .
