Almijara Bowls Club
The Almijara Bowls Club recently held
their November Gala Day competition at
the Raqueta Tennis and Bowls Club,
Nerja. It was sponsored by Liberty
Seguros and the Cup by TAIL Torrox
Animal Charity. There were 36
competitors in 12 teams of triples which
were split into two leagues and the top

Al-Andalus series, at Smiffs bookshop in
October. The book begins in the year
1008 AD with al-Mansur, the despotic
ruler of al-Andalus dead. Civil war looms
as pretenders to the throne battle for
supremacy of the Omayyad dynasty.
Amid the turmoil, Ahmad continues to
look after the falcons, but is torn between
concern for his family’s safety and his
loyalty to al-Hisham, the rightful caliph.
The city of Córdoba is surrounded and
the palace of Madinat al-Zahra is in
ruins. There seems to be no escape, until
help comes from an unexpected ally.
Nerja Bridge Club
On Saturday November 4, Nerja Bridge
Club held their annual mixed pairs
competition for the Colin Haldenby Cup.
Colin was a previous president of the
club, and the cup was bought when he
retired. There were also monetary and

team in each league played the final.
Each team had five games of eight ends
and many games were evenly contested.
One team from each league survived
unbeaten, Alison Gardiner, Keith
Entwistle, and David Crow from one and
David Dickenson, Ken Grainger and
Nigel Locke from the other. The final
was a closely fought affair, with neither
team able to pull away. The final end
could have gone either way, but Nigel,
Ken and David held on to win by three
shots. Congratulations to the victors!
opened the Exhibition and Coby
Bloemsma, a Member Artist and
Exhibition Co-ordinator introduced the
other Artists to the crowd. The
Exhibition will run from now until
December 12 and opens Mon to Sat
11.00-14.00 & 17.00–19.00 with free
entrance, so pop in and view these lovely
works and please vote for your favourite.
The exhibits are available for sale and
quite a number were snapped up at the
opening ceremony. For further

Royal British Legion
Last month the RBL Nerja branch
commemorated the fallen at their
Remembrance Day service at the Al
Andalus hotel, almost 200 people
attended. This year the theme was
remembering the fallen but also looking
to the future and hoping for peace. Tom
Robinson and his Remembrance Choir
gave us beautiful performance of musical
compositions arranged by Tom himself,

event, and 15 pairs took part. Colin

Last month The Arts Society Nerja
opened an Exhibition of Members’ work
at the Sala Mercado, Plaza La Ermita,
Nerja with their paintings, sculptures,
ceramics, photography and jewellery.
The 12 members will be having their
works viewed and voted on by members
and the public with the top 10 being
forwarded to The Arts Society UK in
London. They are holding a Golden
Jubilee Art Exhibition with submissions
from member societies around the
world. Nerja are hoping that one of their
entries may be the winner in this global
event. The opening was attended by
Estrella Rebollo and Anabel Iranzo from
Nerja Town Hall and over 100 members
and friends from the Society. It was a
lively evening of viewing, discussion and
voting with a canapes & wine reception

and Jo Robinson sang the Dido’s Lament
which although sombre was hauntingly
moving. We are so very grateful to Tom
and the choir for coming along to our
Remembrance day event. Although it has
a serious and emotive intent, their
singing and choice of music made it also
a thing of joy. Afterwards about 110
people attended the luncheon at the
