Advanced Placement Human Geography
Course Description:
This elective course introduces students to the systematic study of
patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and
alteration of the Earth's surface. Students employ spatial concepts and
landscape analysis to analyze human social organization and its
environmental consequences. Examining methods and tools geographers
use in their science and practice, this course follows the Advanced
Placement Geography curriculum. This course has high expectations for
the participant. Students can expect at least 45 minutes of homework
most nights. AP Human Geography is a current class that examines
modern day population policies and migrations, cultural studies that
observe the spread of languages and religions, current philosophies of
those religions and the current tension that exist between those religions
from a spatial perspective. We also examine race and ethnic issues
within the perspective of culture. Foreign policies and trade policies of
states are also examined along with current military actions and
strategies. Human Geography also analyzes local and state economies
and current agricultural trends that support local farmers. Finally, the
class concludes with a look into the creation of urban settlements, the
processes that shape them and the spatial relationship between those
cities. Students are expected to take the College Board AP exam upon
completion of the course.
