If there’s one thing you could never accuse Richland Center of, it’s not
taking their status as a Tree City seriously. In addition to all the park space
(I seriously want to go up and play disc golf there sometime) and 450
acres of forest, the city maintains a fairly large arboretum.
The City Arboretum (formally, the Dr. Fred H. Koenecke Arboretum) was
established in 2003 with 134 trees and now contains 200 trees and shrubs
in 65 varieties. The arboretum is next to the wastewater treatment facility,
across the street from the veteran’s memorial, and is free and open to the
public.
Each tree or shrub is labeled with its name, formal name, final size, and
one or more details. If you’re trying to figure out what trees or bushes
to plant, this is certainly the place to go!
